Hi, I'm Jessica! I’m beyond excited to be featured on the Hook Nook Blog. I’d like to share a bit about myself. When I first taught myself to crochet in 2012 it was just a hobby, then knitting came along a few years later. That’s when I really started focusing on the business side of my craft. I also began to realize that my craft wasn’t just a craft, it was therapy to me. I’ve struggled with depression for most of my adult life. I spent 9 years on antidepressants, they worked well for me for a time but I didn't like the numbing effect they had on me. While I was on them, I realized I’d have spurts where I’d crochet nonstop, then not pick up my hook for months.
After the birth of my second daughter, I became a stay at home mom. Suddenly I had so much more time to focus on my craft. That’s when I decided to quit my antidepressants. At the same time, I began to notice that whenever I felt like I was starting to feel down, I would reach for my hook. That's when I started designing original patterns and selling the finished items in my Etsy shop. After a few years, I finally worked up the courage to release my first pattern to the public.
All the while I had been struggling behind the scenes. It wasn’t the depression this time. My craft helped keep that at bay. Right around the time I released my first pattern, I found out I was pregnant again. I had suffered five miscarriages over the last two years. During the darkest of days over those few years, I found that my craft was the one thing that I could focus on. It helped pull me through. We were excited about the news but scared. Neither one of us could deal with another loss. Because of this my anxiety began to get worse. I knew I could ease my mind and calm my anxiety by diving into my work. All the while, my pregnancy progressed without any major issues. Then, on Valentine's Day 2019, our daughter Scarlett was born.
The inspiration behind my sweater.
After Scarlett was born I felt like a weight had been lifted off me. But at the same time, I struggled with postpartum depression for the first few months and quickly realized that my craft, once again, helped get me through. During that time, I released several more patterns. As my postpartum depression subsided, I began focusing on myself, my business, and where I wanted to take it. This past fall I changed my business name, started a blog, attended the Maker’s Retreat, and designed a garment that was all about me. Things I had been wanting to do for quite some time. I decided it was time for big changes. It was time to get myself back. That's how the Jessica Paz Sweater was born. I stepped out of my comfort zone on this design, something that I had been needing to do.
The style: Comfy, oversized sweaters are one of my favorite things to wear. It’s perfect for those lazy days lounging around the house. Either way you wear it, I hope you love it as much as I do.

Sizing
This sweater is designed to be loose fitting with approx. 4”-6” positive ease, depending on size. Due to the patterning, Size 2X only has 3” positive ease. Size up to 3X if you’d like a looser fitting sweater. If you would like a more fitting sweater you may need to size down. The sleeves are designed with a more classic fit, 2”-4” positive ease.
All measurements are based on the Crafty Yarn Councils standard measurements.

Notes
Model is 5’ 4”, bust size 39", and is wearing her true size, large.
Sweater is worked from the bottom up in 2 separate panels, then seamed together in this order: shoulders, sleeves to body, seam along underside of sleeve and down side of body.
The bottom and neck ribbing are added last.
Sleeves are worked flat, starting with the ribbing, from the bottom up.
Ch 1 and Ch 3 do not count as a st. Always make your first st in the same sp.
Do not carry the yarn changes in the row. This keeps the second color from showing. (see photo tutorial) Always change color in the top of the previous st. When joining a new color at the beginning of a row you’ll carry the previous color the first 4 sts. This is the only time you’ll carry the previous color on a color change.
All rows will end with the same st in which they started. So if it begins with sc 4, dc 4 you’ll end on sc 4 instead of dc 4.
The length of the garment is easily adjustable by adding or taking away rows in the 3rd color.
The neck hole is easily adjustable by seaming more or less on the width of the shoulders.
The sleeve length is easily adjustable by adding or taking away rows at the end. Please note the sleeves are already on the longer side.
How to carry your yarn
You’ll always change color in the previous st for a clean color change. Leave dropped yarn in the back of you work.
The yarn left in the back of your work is now in the front. You’re going to carry it in the next four stitches, then change color.
Slip hook under yarn strand and carry it as you go.
Change colors by picking up the color in the front, leaving a slightly loose tension.
As you work your sts, carry the strand of yarn.
When changing colors at the end of a row, pick up the new color, ch, turn, and work your sts, while carrying the strand as you go.
Pattern
The last part of each row after the color change says to pattern, which means you’ll keep following pattern sequence. (sc 4, dc 4 or dc 4, sc 4) The rows will end with the same 4 sts in which you started with. Before you begin, see color change photo tutorial on how to avoid carrying your yarn.

I recommend blocking the body and sleeves before seaming.
Seaming
The sweater is seamed wrong side facing out. There really is no rs/ws of the sweater. You decide which way you like the striping and go from there.
Shoulder Seaming:
Lay your panels out so the shoulder seams are lined up and they mirror each other.
The panel on the left will have the ws facing up and the panel on the right will have the rs facing up. (when you flip them on top of each other, the design will line up)
The neck hole is designed to be over-sized, with enough room to slightly hang off the shoulder.
If you would like a smaller neck hole, seam up more on each side until you have the desired width.
Using st markers, pin the 2 corners together on one end. Measure 4.25”(4.75”, 5.5”, 6”, 6.5”, 6.25”, 7.5”), place another st marker. Now rep the same on the side. You should now have a 8”(9”, 10”,11”,12”,13”,14”) neck hole opening. To get a good idea of how the neck hole will fit, with st markers still in place, place the garment over your head. At this point, adjust the width of the neck hole, as desired.
Once you have your desired neck hole measurement, whip st each shoulder together between st markers. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Sleeve attachment
Lay one sleeve down, rs facing up. Align the center of the sleeve with the shoulder seam. Use the st markers to hold the sleeve in place. Now whip st the sleeve to the body with the long tail you left on the sleeve, making sure to not pull the sts too tight as you seam. Fasten off, weave in ends. Rep for the second sleeve.
Body Seaming
Fold your sweater in half so the ws is facing out. Using a strand of yarn, in color C, approx 2 times the length of the sleeve and body. Start at the ribbing on the sleeve, seam down the sleeve, making a few extra passes in the under arm, then down the side of the body. Fasten off, weave in ends. Rep on the other side. Fold sweater rs out before you move onto ribbing.
Bottom Ribbing
With Color A, attach yarn to 1st st on the bottom edge, ch 3.
Row 1: Dc 52(60,68,76, 84,84,92) ch 3, turn
Rows 2-5: Dc in 1st st, *bpdc. fpdc rep * across, dc in last st, ch 3, turn
Row 6: Dc in 1st st, *bpdc. fpdc rep * across, dc in last st. Fasten off, leaving approx. an 8” tail. Rep ribbing on the other side of the sweater.
Seam up the sides of the ribbing with the long tail. Weave in ends.
Optional: If you would like a slit in the side of the ribbing, do not leave a long tail for seaming. Fasten off, weave in ends.
Neckline Ribbing
With Color C, attach yarn to corner of neckline( at the shoulder seam), ch 3.
Rnd 1: Dc evenly across edge of neckline and across the other edge, sl st, ch 3
Rnd 2: *bpdc, fpdc rep * around, fasten off, weave in ends.
Optional: If you would like a thicker neckline add more rows for desired length.
