I am so excited to share this EASY and super cute pattern combo for you and the littles in your life that I created for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores! It’s always fun to find ways to let your kiddos remember how much you love them. What better way of showing this than to have matching beanies and handkerchiefs?! Seriously, these things are so stinking cute.
I used Big Twist Sincerely to complete this project which was a super fun way to give this easy project some more interest and added cute factors. The speckling of the yarn is SO pretty and is a great imitation to hand-painted options that tend to cost a wee bit more than this affordable acrylic option. Plus, the fact that it’s machine wash- and dry-able is the cherry on the cake. Can’t beat convenience! Also note, Big Twist is a brand of yarn exclusive to Jo-Ann Stores and will be available in your local store!
Let’s get started!
MATERIALS:
-Approx. 2 balls Big Twist Sincerely (makes two beanies, two handkerchiefs)
-Color used in this pattern: Rainbow Confetti
-Size J/6mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
-Yarn Needle
GAUGE:
11 sts x 10 rows = 4”x4” in HDC (gauge applies to both patterns)
KEY:
CH: Chain
Sl St: Slip Stitch
SC: Single Crochet
HDC: Half-Double Crochet
FLO: Front Loop Only
BLO: Back Loop Only
st: Stitch
sts: Stitches
NOTE:
Please keep in mind the safety hazards of wrapping/tying/securing in any fashion materials around the neck of infants and small children. The handkerchief pattern is written with notes beginning at Toddler size due to the unsafe nature of making this item for small infants. No matter the age of the recipient of the handkerchief (infant to adult), please always be mindful to be safe and keep an eye on children in the event of an accident.
BEANIE:
CH 6
1. (Working on the band) Starting in the 2nd CH from hook, SC across. (5)
2. CH 1, turn. SC in FLO across. (5)
3. Repeat Row 2 until you reach your desired length (see sizing chart).
4. Fold band in half, connecting first and last rows. CH 1, Sl St across. (5)
5. CH 1, SC evenly around band. Sl St to first SC.
6. CH 1, HDC in BLO around. Sl St to first HDC.
7. Repeat Round 6 until your piece measures your desired length (see sizing chart).
8. To close hat: CH 1, lay flat so your CH you just created is in the center of your work. Insert hook through stitches on both sides of the beanie, to the other side of the hat, Sl St, which will close it in the center. Bring outside “corners” of the hat to the center and Sl St them closed, around your previous Sl St. Repeat this step to the four “corners” you just created, making 8 “corners”. Sl St each corner individually to the center of your hat. Now the top of your hat should be evenly closed and you can now finish off! See photos below for additional help.

Ta da!!! You did it!!! Now, if your child is anything like my daughter, she’s already been wearing it in your WIP (work in progress) stages and is now beside herself excited that she FINALLY gets to wear it whenever she wants! Children are so funny..
Don’t forget to post photos of your work on social media and use #handmadewithjoann so we can all see what you’ve been up to! Can’t wait to see your color choices! <3
