Going through the process of transitioning from a mountain girl to a beach girl definitely can be a challenge. I've always lived in the mountains, actually very close to the Smoky Mountains, and not doing so any longer is definitely odd to say the least. I've been trying to hop on the beach band wagon that everyone is on, and decided hey, maybe getting some beach crochet in would help. Lately, I've been making myself cute beach bags and such since I'll need them now. Okay, well I actually don't need them, but having them to take with me is quite nice.
In trying to embrace more of the beachy life, any time I go to Florida to just spend the weekend with my husband or to check on our house's progress, I have enjoyed a walk on the beach. After a few times walking on the beach, I definitely see the appeal of living next to the water. Standing on a beach with your toes in the sand, as waves crash around your ankles as you look out on an endless sky has to be one of the absolute most relaxing things ever. This is a very mind calming activity. As the waves pull away just imagine they are taking all your problems with them as well and feel that inner peace.
Something that definitely has helped the transition is growing up in the South where its VERY hot during the summer. Flip flops are a must in your daily life unless you're hiking or exercising. You will sweat far too much to be wearing regular shoes all the time. So the nice thing is that you at least that transition is the same. Its a part of my daily life that I will definitely keep the same. Even growing up, I always had tons of flip flops and always looked forward to the Old Navy sales. Does anyone remember those? That time of year when you could get their flip flops for about $2.50? Everyone stocked up and had them in every color to match your whole summer wardrobe.
I'm very excited about my latest adventure and can't wait to get down there and take on all the festivals and of course eat some new delicious foods. I also am excited to go to my first orange grove where I can pick an orange off the tree! There are many things I've never done that I'm blessed to get to experience. One of those being, I've never made a flip flop wall hanging till now!

Finish off
Attaching to dowel
Attach yarn around dowel or stick using slip stitch. Link to TUTORIAL
Use one slip stitch per stitch across and tie off.
Tassels
(completely optional and lots of options)
Braids
Cut 11 strands for each side
Long Braids- about 50” long and Short Braids- about 20” long
These will be folded over the top of your dowel and braided. One part will have one more than the rest.
Add braids to each side of wall hanging
Beaded tassels
Cut 4 strands for each side about 40” long
Tie at the top and thread beads on yarn and tie off under bead where you want them to sit.
Have fun with it. Tie some beads to two stands or one.
Giant Tassels
I used a folder to wrap the yarn around multiple times till its quite thick. Take along piece and make the tassel part at the top my wrapping multiple times around the strands and tying off and push the tassel onto the dowel. Cut the other end of the tassel bunch.
Regular Tassels
(if you want to do them in a downward V like I did, decide which colors you want where)
Cut 7 strands of yarn per tassel. These can be of the same length or varying lengths. My shortest tassel hangs at about 9” once attached and longest is 18” attached. Remember add an extra inch roughly to the length you want for tie off an trimming
100% personal preference. I brush my tassels to separate the strands of yarn a bit so they all look fuller.
If you don’t want to do that, but want them to be very straight, take a flat iron on the lowest setting and barely glide them across.
Getting to work with one of my favorite crochet people again is absolutely amazing. Jessica makes amazing yarn and has excelled in so many ways! People like her give me that extra drive and motivation to make more and more patterns and to just be myself in doing so! Be true to yourself and keep crocheting!
